VALE TUDO

Before there was the UFC there was Vale Tudo and Carlos Gracie Sr.'s Heróis do Ringue, which aired on Brazilian TV from 1959 to 1960 and pitted practitioners of various styles against practitioners of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in "no holds barred" competition. This form of fight sport lives on, most notably in in Jorge Pereira's Rio Heroes (now the subject of a dramatic TV series on Fox Brasil). 

As Jorge told a group of us recently: "If you don't know Jiu-Jitsu with strikes, then you don't know Jiu-Jitsu!"
